The honest comparison
Why supervised beats shipped
Mail-order aligners are cheaper for a reason: no X-rays, no doctor watching your roots and gums, and nowhere to walk in when something feels wrong. Here’s the difference, line by line.
| What matters | Alder aligners | Mail-order kits |
|---|---|---|
| Before anything moves | Exam + X-rays + 3D scan — roots, gums, and bite checked first | A selfie and a home putty mold |
| Who supervises | Dr. Alder, in person, every 6–8 weeks | A remote reviewer you’ll never meet |
| Mid-course corrections | Attachments + refinement trays, included | Rarely offered; often a new purchase |
| Something feels wrong | Walk in this week | Email support and hope |
| Complex movements | Rotations and bite issues handled | Front-teeth tipping only |
| Typical total cost | $2,900–$5,500, fixed in writing after the scan | $1,200–$2,300 — plus redo costs when it drifts |

The timeline
From scan to retainer
Most cases finish in 6 to 18 months. You’ll know your estimated timeline — and see your projected end result — before you commit.
№ 01 · Day 1
Free scan + preview
A digital 3D scan (no goop) plus X-rays. Software projects your finished smile on screen; you take the preview home with the fixed price.
№ 02 · Week 3
Trays arrive
We fit your first trays, place any attachments, and show you the wear routine: 20–22 hours a day, a new tray every 1–2 weeks.
№ 03 · Months 2–18
Checkups + refinements
Quick in-person checks every 6–8 weeks keep movement on plan. If teeth lag the projection, refinement trays are made at no charge.
№ 04 · Done
Retainers
Your first set of retainers is included — nightly wear keeps the result for good. We check the fit at your regular cleanings.

Aligner questions
Before you ask
Will people notice I’m wearing them?
Rarely. The trays are thin, clear, and trimmed to your gumline. Most patients report coworkers never notice — and you remove them for photos, meals, and coffee anyway.
Does it hurt?
Each new tray feels snug for a day or two — pressure, not pain. That’s the feeling of teeth moving on schedule.
I had braces years ago and my teeth drifted. Am I a typical case?
You’re our most common case. Post-braces relapse usually lands in the Limited track — shorter and cheaper than you’re probably expecting.
What if I lose a tray?
Call us — usually you jump to the next tray early or we reprint the lost one for a small lab fee. Nothing derails the plan.
